May 8 (Reuters) - Sports news in brief from around the world:
Soccer - Striker Vincenzo Iaquinta is a major doubt for Italy's Euro 2008 squad after Juventus said in a statement he would not play again this season and would return to training with the club in July.
Iaquinta, who has been linked with a move away from the club, has a thigh injury which may further increase the chances of Alessandro Del Piero receiving an Italy recall.
Soccer - Newcastle United's 32-year-old Australia forward Mark Viduka, who has scored seven goals in 21 starts during his first season at the Premier League club, could be out of action for up to six months with an Achilles injury.
"If he's out for six months then it's a major blow," manager Kevin Keegan said on the club's Web site. "Mark has been very good for us and when he has started games we have generally played well and got a result. We will know more in two weeks"
Boxing - Thailand has banned Olympic bronze medallist Suriya Prasathinphimai for one year for failing a drugs test at the Southeast Asian Games (SEA), the country's amateur boxing federation said.
Suriya, who won bronze in the middleweight (75kg) category at the Athens Olympics, was stripped of his SEA Games gold after testing positive during the competition in his home province of Nakhon Ratchasima in December.
Thai newspapers said Suriya, who failed to qualify for August's Beijing Olympics, had denied intentionally taking a banned substance.
Athletics - The Ethiopian government has stopped nine of its athletes taking part in Friday's IAAF Qatar Super Grand Prix after the country broke diplomatic ties with the Gulf state last month, organisers said.
"Unfortunately, politics is getting mixed with sport," Dahlan Al Hamad, president of the Qatar Association of Athletics Federation said. "We did everything... We sent them the air tickets, visas and rooms were booked in hotels. But yesterday we got the news that they were stopped by their government."
Golf - The Madrid Masters, which will be played at Club de Campo in Madrid from Oct. 9-12, has been added to this year's European Tour schedule.
