PRETORIA (Reuters) - South Africa's central bank did not have a responsibility to manage the exchange rate, said Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni on Tuesday.
Mboweni was responding to a report released last week by a group of international economists commissioned by the National Treasury, which recommended that South Africa take steps to intervene in the currency market to keep the rand stable.
"I understand that there's a study that has come out ... which suggests that the South Africa Reserve Bank should first determine the comparative level of the exchange rate and after that manage the exchange rate in such a way as to boost exports," he told a news conference.
"We are not going to do anything of the sort ... The South African Reserve Bank is not in the business of managing the exchange rate, we are in the business of targeting inflation," Mboweni said.
